Membership

Membership in the Montclair PTO is open to any parent or guardian of a child currently enrolled at Montclair Elementary School, as well as any faculty or staff member of the school who opts-in to membership by acknowledging and agreeing to follow the code of conduct. No dues shall be collected for participation in PTO activities, meetings, or initiatives. All PTO events, fundraisers, meetings, and initiatives shall remain open to the public, regardless of membership status.

Code of Conduct

  • Communicate Respectfully

    • Interact with all staff, families, visitors, vendors, and fellow PTO members with courtesy and respect, using constructive language in discussions and communications.

  • Represent the PTO Positively

    • Act as a positive representative of the PTO and support its mission, programs, activities, and decisions in all communications and actions.

  • Engage Actively

    • Participate in PTO activities, meetings, and initiatives in good faith, contributing to a positive, inclusive, and collaborative community.

  • Maintain Integrity

    • Use PTO resources, communications, and opportunities in alignment with the organization’s mission,

Membership shall remain active for the duration of the individual’s connection to Montclair Elementary, unless the member submits a written request to dissolve their membership. Should changes be made to the Code of Conduct, all members shall sign a new acknowledgement and agreement.

  • Privileges of membership:

    • Vote on matters requiring general membership approval

      • No individual may cast more than one vote per matter, even if serving in multiple capacities.

      • Members must have attended at least three PTO meetings during the current school year to be eligible to vote on elections and annual budget approvals to ensure that voting members are actively engaged in PTO matters and are well-informed.

      • For any elections or budget adjustments occurring outside of the annual votes, the three-meeting attendance requirement is waived, allowing all current members to participate regardless of prior meeting attendance.

      • Annual election and budget votes shall be conducted in person by paper ballot.

    • Chair or co-chair committees or serve in appointed leadership roles

      • Standing committees shall be created or dissolved by the President and the Executive Officers as necessary. Standing committee chairpersons shall be approved by the Board of Directors and their terms shall extend from the time of appointment to June 30th.

      • Special committees may be created at the discretion of the President or the Executive Officers to satisfy a specific short-term objective.

    • Be eligible for election to Executive Officer positions

Members are expected to uphold the Code of Conduct at all times. When a member engages in behavior that violates the Code in any way, the Executive Officers will be expected to take disciplinary action. Disciplinary measures are intended to be fair, transparent, and proportional to the severity of the violation, while protecting the PTO’s mission, cohesion, and community.

  • Disciplinary actions may include:

    • Verbal or written reminders/warnings to clarify expectations and guide corrective behavior.

    • Temporary suspension to allow reflection and prevent further disruption.

    • Revocation of membership

      • Before a vote is taken, the member shall receive written notice of the concern and be provided an opportunity to respond
